Black Lab – All you Need to Know about Black Labrador Retriever

Labradors are not from Canada’s town “Labrador”, they are actually from Newfoundland. Black Lab we see today are descended from St. John’s Dogs. In the past, the most preferred Labs color was black.

Yellow and Chocolate Labradors were culled soon after birth and only black were kept. You may have many questions in mind related to Black Labs, you can find all these in this article.

History of Black Labradors

Labradors were discovered in Newfoundland in the 1700s, then taken to England and later they spread all over the world. They were the favorite dogs of fishermen due to their love for the water.

The St John’s Waterdogs were the ancestors of Labradors. These dogs later exported to England from Newfoundland, where their cross with other dogs results in retrievers origin. St John’s dogs are now extinct in their homeland due to heavy taxation, restrictions, and lack of people’s interest.

Black Labs have the extraordinary abilities to retrieve objects, love for the water, and friendly nature. Therefore they started to spread and now it is the most famous breed in the USA. Other colors like yellow and chocolate were culled, they expose later and registered by AKC.

Breed Standards of Black Labrador

Official Standards for Labrador Retriever are medium-sized, strongly built, short-coupled, athlete, and well-balanced.

According to the American Kennel Club:

The Labrador Retriever coat colors are black, yellow, and chocolate. Any other color or a combination of colors is a disqualification. A small white spot on the chest is permissible, but not desirable. White hairs from aging or scarring are not to be misinterpreted as brindling. Black – Blacks are all black. A black with brindle markings or a black with tan markings is a disqualification. “

There may be white patches in pure black labs, but these are not recommended and disqualified by AKC. A small white spot on the chest is acceptable only. Many Breeders cull their labs with white spots due to their effect on the next generation.

Why Black is Most Common Color?

Black color in Labradors is most famous. According to our survey, about 60-65% of total Labradors in America are Black Labs. So, question is, why the black color is so common? there are several reasons behind that.

Yellow and chocolate colors were culled soon after birth and did not allow to breed. Only black labs were selectively bred and their ancestors were also black in color but with white patches. So, people believe that only black is pure color in Labradors and other colors are due to cross-breeding and introduced by breeders.

Pure Bred Black Labrador Retriever

The gene responsible for the black color is “B” and it is dominant over “b” which causes brown color. If “BB” is present then the color will be black and if “Bb” then the color also will be black but with dilution gene and only if “bb” is present, then the color will be brown.

American Labs VS English Labs

There are two sub-types of Labradors: American Labs and English Labs, The difference is among their behavior and appearance.

The best labs for non-professional owners are English Labs because they are easy to train and best-hunting companions.

The best labs for professional owners are American Labs because they are more energetic, bred to complete in-field trails, hard to train, and need extra time.

If we talk about appearance, American Labs are leaner and long-legged while English Labs have blocky heads.

Problems of Black Labradors

The Labrador lifespan is 9-12 years. There is not any specific problem related to the color of Labrador.

Labradors shed a lot and you can see his hairs everywhere in the house. Black hairs make more contrast on non-black surfaces as compare to other colors, so their hairs may look bad.

All Labradors have problems like chewing and jumping, but these can be solved with proper training and care.

Black Labrador Being Checked by Veterinarian

If we talk about health issues, Labs can face canine hip dysplasia, eye problems, osteochondritis dissecans, muscular dystrophy, diabetes, and other minor problems. To avoid these, a proper health checkup is necessary after 15-20 days and tests should be performed to check eyes, ears, elbow, and knee problems.

How Black Labradors are Different?

The Black Lab owner may keep his dog for enjoyment, love, and protection. But, in the past, they were used for hunting and retrieving. It was believed that the black color is best for these purposes.

Due to their love for water and excellent smelling power, they were preferred by hunters for retrieving hunted birds and hand/lost objects.

Labradors’ ancestors “St John’s Dogs” were also black in color and highly trainable, energetic, and friendly, so people believe that only black labs can gain similar characteristics, therefore other colors were culled.

We can assume that chocolate and yellow colors were bred for appearance purposes and may not have the same genes for working and hunting as Black Labs have.

A Black Labrador is more shiny and graceful than other colors, that’s maybe the reason people kept them more. The black color is also more preferable for hunting because it is less visible and scary.

Black Labrador Puppies

Black Labradors were bred for working purposes and have genes for that, So before choosing a Labrador puppy, be sure for what purpose you want it.

English Black labs are easy to train and best for non-professionals, if you don’t have experience with dogs then buy an English Black Labrador Puppy.

American Labs need more time for training and are for professionals, So buy if you have previous experience and time for their training.

Yellow and Black Labrador Puppies

Black Color has become too common, but it is also more shiny and graceful. Black labs may be normal for you, but they have the same abilities and characteristics, other colors have.

If you want to buy a Black Labrador Puppy, then you will not face any difficulty, because there are too many breeders with purebred black labs.

Black Labs are also good if we talk about price. Other colors have slightly higher prices. You can get a purebred black lab puppy for about $1200-1400 from a breeder and $300-400 from a rescue center.

Conclusion

Black is the most famous color in Labradors. They are easily available at a normal price. Black labs have a more shiny and graceful coat. They were initially bred for working and hunting purposes and now they are popular as guide dogs. Their temperament is normal and natural is friendly.

  12. Extinction is an important concept in training your Labrador Retriever. Labs are smart and can take advantage of their owners. Who hasn’t experienced those pools of hope staring at you as you nibble on a snack? When behaviors are reinforced they occur more frequently. If the behavior is not reinforced, either positively by providing a reinforcer, or negatively, by taking away a reinforcer, extinction occurs. This is the basis behind extinction, the behavior gets no response, it doesn’t work and therefore becomes extinct.
