Their name tells us they are from Labrador but actually their ancestors were found in Newfoundland known as St. John’s Water Dog. Their love for water, water-resistant coat, and best hunting capabilities enable them to become popular among hunters. Later they were imported to England where they named Labradors and reared for hunting and retrieving.

Dudley Marjoribanks developed this breed, and in 1908 they were first seen at British dog show. Later they were imported to America from Canada.
